🌹 Reclaiming Magdalene: A Lineage Remembered

July 22 is known as Mary Magdalene’s Feast Day—a day set aside to honor the legacy of a woman whose story has echoed through centuries.

It is a day to remember her as the devoted companion and partner. It is a day to reclaim her name from the distortions that have been layered over it—where she was cast as sinner, harlot, or outcast in an attempt to diminish her power.

Her feast is more than a day of remembrance; it is a portal for reawakening her archetypal energy in ourselves and in the world.

(I wrote about this living connection to my lineage in The Wheel of the Woman: An Almanac for Women’s Wellbeing, a guide for attuning to seasonal rhythms and ancestral memory.)

A Lineage Awakens

This day carries a resonance in my own life that I cannot ignore.

My grandmother, Joan, was born on July 22—Magdalene’s Feast Day—perhaps reawakening the current of this lineage in our family line.

When I began tracing back through my matrilineal line, I discovered a river of Magdalene names flowing in my blood:

꩜ Maria Magdalena Miller (1780–1856)

꩜ Mary Magdalene Bos (1744–1829)

꩜ Maria Magdalena Streit Benner (1709–1770)

And before them, my grandmothers beyond.

🌹 Who is a Modern Magdalena?

In MM Publication Vol. I, we opened with the question: “Who is a Modern Magdalena?”

For us, the Modern Magdalena is a woman reclaiming her voice after centuries of silence. She is the one branded as deviant, witch, rebel—who turns the curse into a crown. She is the one who remembers that all Women and Beings are Holy.

To honor Magdalene is to honor every woman who has ever been cast out, stigmatized, or disowned for daring to live as herself.

An Invitation to Remember

Perhaps you too are a Modern Magdalena. Perhaps you have felt her presence—on this day, or in the quiet stirrings of your own bloodline.

May this Magdalene’s Feast be a moment of remembrance. For Her. For you. For us all.
